ππ΄π MY FIRST TRI SPOTLIGHT β SARA π
From competitive artistic swimming, to taking up running, to completing her first triathlon β Sara's journey is a brilliant example of what happens when you just give it a go.
π BEFORE THE JOURNEY
What made you decide to try triathlon?
I decided to try after seeing a lot of members of the club having fun. I volunteered at the Outlaw feed station in May and loved the energy, so I decided to give it a go.
Had you done much swimming, cycling or running before?
Swimming was my life until my 20s. I did artistic swimming for 15 years at competitive level, but I stepped away in bad terms and haven't swum for years. In the last two years, I picked up running.
What were you most nervous about?
I was, and still am, nervous about cycling and open-water swimming β even if the latter is not as bad as I thought!
What nearly stopped you from coming?
I didn't own a bike or the kit for open-water swimming. I didn't know if I was going to love it, so I wasn't sure about investing the money to try.
What were you hoping to achieve?
I was hoping to finish it alive and have fun! π
π DURING TRAINING
What surprised you most about the club?
I signed up for the swimming sessions and I was blown away by the support and welcoming feeling.
What's been your biggest challenge?
Cycling, definitely! I had the fortune of having Chris support me and teach me everything β I mean everything, including when and how to change gears! π
What's been your favourite part of training?
The swimming, 100%.
Have you made any new friends?
Well, I have a swimming buddy (hi Paul π), who I consider my water friend, and Tracey (Paul's wife), who allowed me to borrow her bike to give it a go. Incredible people.
What's the biggest thing you've learned?
That you can have fun even if you don't know exactly what you are doing, and that no one will judge you for your performance.
Has anything changed?
I had so much fun I've signed up for two more, and I've asked Tracey to buy her bike because I can see more in the future! π¬
π MY FIRST TRIATHLON
How did you feel on the start line?
I was nervous and gutted because, in the end, the swimming. So it wasn't actually a triathlon. I went to the race very early to understand the transition area and all the rules.
What was going through your head during the race?
I was having fun and just trying to learn, lap by lap, how to do better. There was also a bit of swearing against the headwind! π€¬
What was your favourite part?
The run was fun, sweet and short! I was pleased the cycling hadn't completely messed up my legs.
What was the hardest part?
Cycling is most definitely not my strength. That said, in the sprint distance it wasn't too horrible!
What are you most proud of?
I'm proud I signed up and didn't pull back. Now I know I can do it β and I can do better.
How did Nottingham Triathlon Club help you?
The club has the best people within its members. Someone gave me their bike, someone gave up their time to teach me the basics, the swimming lessons are great, and the team in general is very supportive. I'm so lucky to be part of this club. π
How did you feel crossing the finish line?
Happy and grateful to be able to do it.
What's next?
I've signed up for the Duathlon on 5th September and the Derby Triathlon Sprint on 13th September. Last but not least... the Robin Hood Half, obviously! π¬
β‘ QUICK FIRE
π Swim, Bike or Run?
Swim!
β Favourite club sessions?
Track and swim sessions.
π One word to describe Nottingham Triathlon Club?
Inspiring.
π¬ What would you say to someone thinking about joining?
"Come and join us, you will have a great time."
π Thinking about giving triathlon a go? Your journey could start with one session.
