I joined to meet people in the Nottingham area after recently moving from London. The swim and track sessions also looked really good and fitted around my work hours.

π Wednesday morning swim, 6:00β7:30am with Ollie. He's helped me improve my swim technique and the session gives me the motivation to swim as it's not my favourite triathlon discipline!

Why did you join Nottingham Triathlon Club?
In a nutshell: my son, Ned. He wanted to join after seeing the junior squad training on a Tuesday evening, and I decided it would be better to get back in the pool than sit on the balcony for an hour every week. It had been around 10 years since my last triathlon and, when I joined, I had no intention of returning to the sport. I simply saw it as a way to add some variety to my cyclo-cross and mountain bike training.
My swim form came back much better than I expected and that competitive itch soon returned. With XTERRA making its return to the UK, it all felt a bit like fate!
Favourite session?
Club-wise, I can generally only make the Tuesday swim session, but my favourite set has to be an old-school 20 x 100m at CSS pace with 15 seconds recovery. Find your rhythm, get stuck in, and try not to lose count!
Outside of club sessions, you can't beat 2β3 hours on the mountain bike at somewhere like Cannock Chase or heading out for a gravel ride β the hillier, the better.
Something you wish you'd known at the start of your triathlon journey?
Don't be afraid to try something a bit different. Back in the early 2000s, my triathlon coach suggested I give cyclo-cross a go over the winter as a way to improve bike handling and add some high-intensity training. As a road cyclist at the time, it felt like a big leap, but it worked and I've loved the sport ever since.
I think most triathletes would benefit from spending more time riding off-road. Not only does it improve handling skills, but it becomes much more of a full-body workout as you're constantly moving around on the bike.
More recently, I only got into mountain biking because of Ned, but it's opened up a whole new world of events and experiences, including racing in the Dolomites last September.
Next event?
My next A-race will probably be XTERRA UK next May, but before then I'll be racing mountain bikes throughout the summer, followed by a full cyclo-cross season and plenty of cross-country and trail running over the winter.
Goal for 2026?
First, get my slightly injured ankle sorted and then focus on improving my run pace. And, perhaps most importantly, introduce Ned to the world of open-water triathlon at Mallory at the end of June.
