Fundraiser Spotlight Reece P. Newman
π― What are you fundraising for?
I'm fundraising for Alzheimer's Society once again in 2026
π Why is this cause important to you? With my late Father being diagnosed with Alzheimer's & Vascular Dementia, back in 2019, I took on the role of being his full time carer until 2022, although I still was on hand all the time when he was in a dementia friendly care home, helping to still care for him right until he sadly passed away in May. Iβm still a full time carer for my Mother, who too was diagnosed back in 2024 with the same as my Father. I also lost my Aunt to the same (Alzheimerβs & Vascular Dementia) in 2025.
ππ΄π What challenge or event are you taking on?
I'm taking on 11 events again this year, which started with the Leicestershire Half Marathon back in Feb, although this was out of costume, but from there, I took on the Nottingham 10k, the Derby 10k, Great Birmingham Run, and next up is the Ram 5, Wilne 10k, Great North Run, Robin Hood Half Marathon, Yorkshire Marathon, Worksop Halloween Half Marathon and then the Derby 10 Mile, so thatβs 10 events in the Superman costume!
πͺ How has training been going?
Training has been going fine so far, the only slight injury that I have had, is just some slight fluid on the knee which is to be drained, although, I have had an x-ray upon said knee, there is no damage. Iβve managed to participate in some of the swim sessions hosted by Karen Round, at Trent College, as well as doing some swims at my local pool, and doing many miles, out and about, on my own and with my running partner β Elliot, who has been a rock over the last few years, with what has been happening with my Father, my Mother and also, my own health, having been diagnosed with a rare syndrome last year, which has caused growths upon my lung and kidney, although, they are benign at the moment.
β What's been the biggest challenge so far?
I suppose itβs been the two marathons last year, as I never thought Iβd ever get to run one at my age! Being in my mid 50βs, I took part in the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon last May, in 35 degrees heat, in costume, and a very hilly incline, from 18 miles in!!! That was a challenge! I still completed it, in an okay time, 4hrs 26mins. My 2nd Marathon, I took part in the Leeds Marathon in October last year. I ended up starting 14 mins late due to the coach from York Train Station getting stuck in traffic, and the Marathon starting at 9.30am, I arrived at the event village, at 9.25am, and then it was another 10 mins walk to the start line, so at 9.44am, I started right at the back! A local newspaper picked up on this too! They put a photo and comment out saying βit looks like someone got stuck in a phonebox!β I managed though to complete the marathon in 4hrs 1min!
π What keeps you motivated on the tough days?
Sometimes, itβs music, as when I venture out, I always have to have some music on, some dance classics, some of my remixes, but, it keeps you going. Having someone to run with as well, that helps, although myself and Elliot canβt always get out together all the time, when we do, we have a very chatty run! Sometimes, we bang the world to rights!
π― What's your goal for the event?
For the Ramathon and the other remaining events, Iβm just aiming to complete them and not aim for a time specifically, but, if I do get a pretty good time in any of them, then, that is a bonus. Iβm just going to take in the atmosphere, and the shout outs of Superman, and the hi-5βs! That all helps keep me going! Elliot has been on the journey with me for the last 3 years at many of the events, and itβs been great to have him there! From when we started to do some miles together in 2024, heβs become like family to me. I know though that the final run β the Derby 10 Mile will be a very emotional one for me, as that was the last my Father could come and watch me at back in 2019.
π¬ How can people support your fundraising efforts?
This is my latest JustGiving page for this yearβs runs: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Reece-Superman-Newman2026 - Sponsoring me for the price of a pint, every Β£ helps towards finding a cure for Alzheimerβs & Dementia, with Alzheimerβs Society being a charity very close to my heart.
π Good luck at the Ramathon this weekend.
